HR vs. People Operations
Human Resources and People Operations often describe overlapping functions. The difference is usually one of emphasis, not a universally accepted boundary.
Traditional HR terminology can encompass the full employee lifecycle, compliance, workforce administration, talent practices, and organizational support. “People Operations” is often used by organizations that want to emphasize employee experience, systems design, data, and operational improvement.
Does the name matter?
Less than the work. A company with an HR department may be highly strategic and employee-centered; a People Operations team may still manage routine administration. Titles should not be treated as reliable evidence of maturity.
A better question is: What outcomes does the function own, and how effectively does it support both people and the business?
