What Is HRIS?
HRIS stands for Human Resources Information System. It is software used to store, organize, and manage core employee and HR information.
An HRIS often acts as the system of record for employee data. Depending on the product, it may handle employee profiles, organizational structures, time off, documents, workflows, reporting, and integrations with payroll or benefits systems.
Common HRIS features
- Employee records and job history
- Organizational charts and positions
- Time-off tracking
- Document and policy workflows
- Basic reporting and analytics
- Employee and manager self-service
HRIS vs. HCM vs. HRMS
The market uses these terms inconsistently. In broad usage, HRIS often emphasizes core employee records, while HCM can describe a wider suite covering talent, workforce management, and strategic people processes. HRMS is frequently used as another umbrella term.
When evaluating software, compare actual capabilities rather than relying on the category label alone.
