HR covers the systems, practices, and decisions involved in attracting people, bringing them into the organization, supporting their work, developing their capabilities, rewarding them, managing performance, and handling departures.

What does HR do?

Common HR responsibilities include workforce planning, recruiting, onboarding, compensation and benefits, employee relations, learning and development, performance management, HR systems, compliance, and offboarding. The exact mix depends on the size, industry, and location of the organization.

Why does HR matter?

Organizations depend on people to execute strategy. HR helps create the structures that allow those people to contribute effectively while reducing avoidable organizational and employment risk.

HR is not only administration

Payroll forms, policies, and records matter, but modern HR can also influence organization design, manager capability, workforce analytics, succession planning, employee experience, and business strategy.

In one sentence: HR is the organizational function that designs and supports the systems governing work and people.
